Welcome to The Weekend Wrap-Up, where we discuss all things pop culture from this week as it relates to black millennials.

And what a GREAT week in the world of black pop culture. From Beyonce meeting Duchess Meghan to dropping a whole album to go with the Lion King with stunning visuals, to the new 007 being a black woman to Jordyn Woods living her best life – it’s been a great week to be black! So let’s dive right in!

You can either watch The Weekend Wrap-Up on YouTube or check out the written version below. Or, even better – you can watch it and read it because they are not identical, and you might miss something if you only watch or just read! Just do both 🙂

Beyoncé is THE BEST

We got amazing Beyoncé stories this week and I feel like my IG feed is half Beyoncé at the moment – not that it’s a bad thing! First off, Beyoncé attended the London premiere of The Lion King with hubby Jay-Z and they met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aka Harry and Meghan. It was sublime to say the least. Duchess Meghan and Queen Bey hugged and chatted about their babies and it was all beautiful.

According to Hello:

“Beyoncé congratulated Meghan on the arrival of Archie, telling her: “The baby, so beautiful. We love you guys.” Jay-Z also went to hug Meghan and congratulate her on Archie, before the royal introduced the couple to Harry. “You’ve been rather busy,” Harry told Beyoncé, before Jay-Z told him: “Congratulations on the birth of your baby.” On the conversation of parenting, Harry then asked Beyoncé and Jay-Z about their youngest children, twins Rumi and Sir, who were born in 2017. “They are not here. They don’t come on every trip,” Beyoncé explained. “We left them at home. They would love to have been here.” Jay-Z then gave Harry some parenting advice: “The best advice I can give you, always find some time for yourself,” he said.”

So are they friends now?! Will we see photos of Meghna and Beyoncé grabbing coffee in LA?! Or maybe eating avocado toast and tea in London?! They should be friends. They are both unfairly attacked for daring to have a work ethic and move through life as confident, secure black women. You know, cuz black women should stay in their lanes and not rock the boat *eyeroll emoji. Anyways, I love this.

MORE Beyoncé

In more Beyoncé news, she curated an entire album to coincide with the release of The Lion King. Not only did she release the album, she also released a video for Spirt and the visuals were incredible. From tons of outfit changes, to incredible dancing to the stunning backdrops – the video was a win and had everybody talking for good reason. Oh, and Blue Ivy is in the video looking as fierce as her mama!

And if that wasn’t enough, a single from the album called Brown Skin Girl came out and it’s basically a love letter to black girls. It starts with Blue singing and she gets songwriter credit on the song, which is smart AF because she will forever get royalty cheques. That’s how we accumulate generational wealth.

I’m here for all black girls so I’m obviously here for the song as a beautiful brown skin girl. As I said at the time when Lemonade came out, I love that Beyoncé has fully embraced her blackness and isn’t shying away from it. It’s a good look and we appreciate it.

Black 007???

On another black girl magic note, British Jamaican actress Lashana Lynch has been cast as the new 007 in the new James Bond movie. That’s right – a black girl is becoming 007. No, she isn’t going to be Bond but it’s still super exciting news.

From Pajiba:

“The Daily Mail reports “traditionalists can relax: she’s not the new Bond, but a new character who takes over his secret agent number after he leaves MI6.” Translation: racist f*ckbois can relax because it’s not that James Bond will be played by Lynch. It’s that his code name has been passed down to a new top agent.

“According to TDM’s insider, there’s a scene where M (Ralph Fiennes) says “Come in, 007.” And it’s not Daniel Craig who enters, but Lynch. TDM credits contributing Bond 25 screenwriter, Fleabag writer/creator/star, and Pajiba 10 contender Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the “popcorn-dropping moment.” But shock value aside, it’s unclear how much Lynch will actually have to do in the film that’s now in production. After all, Craig is still the headliner.”

So this is big news. It’s big that she’s not being cast as just a “Bond Girl” and hopefully her character will actually be developed. Hopefully she will be complex and interesting and not just click bait to pull us into the theatre.

Are you feeling this announcement, or do you think it’s gonna be a disappointment?
